Throughout the year, we plan to include articles about MSBO’s Leadership Institute, which will hopefully provide members insight into the program.
In 2008, the MSBO Board of Directors adopted a strategic plan that included future “higher level” learning opportunities for members. After staff research and development, the MSBO Board felt the time was right to move forward with the program this year.
We knew that it had to be a different type of leadership program.
The MSBO Leadership Institute addresses three major themes: Vision, Focus and Action. It includes four face-to-face group sessions focusing on specific leadership themes, an online learning community and separate executive personal coaching sessions. The first MSBO Leadership Institute cohort includes 29 individuals from across the state and from a variety of disciplines – including three associate members from diverse industries and three MSBO staff members. The first step of the cohort was to participate in individual coaching sessions with our executive coach, David Hulings. These coaching sessions began the process of self-evaluation of individual leadership styles and preferences.
It was more than just a field trip.
In October, the cohort met in Grand Rapids and took the time to tour the Gerald Ford Presidential Library and Museum. It proved to be a welcomed and unique experience for participants. It was more than a field trip, it was an opportunity for participants to examine their own leadership style and analyze the leadership style of President Ford during a unique time in American History. An in-depth discussion of personality preferences and understanding how those preferences influence actions and interactions with those around us - as well as applying that knowledge in the workplace – was the focus of the day.
Continuing the journey.
Prior to the January 2012 face-to-face group session, participants will complete a series of assessments designed to further their understanding of personality preferences and participate in the online learning community via discussion blogs. These supplemental assessments and the online learning community will allow for more customized individual coaching.
MSBO is excited to launch the Leadership Institute and looks forward to building on lessons learned, which will serve as the foundation for next year. Be sure to consider your involvement in the future.
